Hi everyone! Welcome to 2017! We at Pregnant & Beyond hope that the holiday season was wonderful and that everyone is getting into the groove for the New Year.
I’d like to talk about one of my favorite gifts this year – the Dyson V8 Absolute Cordless Vacuum. I already own and love the upright Dyson Animal – I’ve had it for years, but the appeal of a cordless version was just too good to overlook. There’s good and bad with this story, so we will start with the not so great…
Dyson had a sale that started on Christmas Eve at 7 pm and ended on Christmas Day at 7 pm. I’d had my eye on this vacuum for some time, but wavered often due to the hefty price tag. However, I was luckily enough to have the cost of one gifted to me for Christmas. So, there I was, probably online on Christmas Eve with only other nursing mothers, and I saw the sale…it was $120 off the regular price and included expedited shipping, which according to the purchase agreement, was 2-3 business days, a $35 value. I thought this was awesome and soon, the credit card numbers were inputted and I was happily anticipating the arrival of the new machine prior to ringing in 2017.
Avid online shoppers like me know that when you make a purchase, an email is sent to you stating that the order had been received, and often, that another email would be sent when the item had shipped. I didn’t receive any such email, but I acknowledged that it was unlikely anyone was working right then, so I thought I would likely receive one on Boxing Day, but again, it didn’t arrive. I was anxious about receiving the sale price, especially as the receipt that I was able to print off didn’t have an order number, so I called the customer service line for Dyson Canada. This is where the not great part begins…there was a voice message stating that they were closed for the holidays, but no mention of when they would reopen. I waited a few more days and then sent an email to the service email address provided on December 28, 2016. I received a reply on December 31 that my order had been received and the representative stated that the delay was due to funds having to clear from financial institutions (I’ve never had this happen with any other purchase) and that I would receive an email with a tracking number shortly. I decided to call again since someone had replied to my email, but was greeted with the same message stating indefinite holiday closure.
The first week of 2017 went by and I still hadn’t heard anything. Then, an email arrived stating that the V8s were so popular that they couldn’t stock them fast enough (hmmm, I thought they originally said it was for funds to clear???). They were expecting another order the following week and I would receive an email with a tracking number when that shipment arrived. My vacuum finally arrived January 11, 2017, with no shipment email ever being sent. So, while I’m thankful that it finally arrived, I was frustrated at the inability to contact anyone and while I acknowledge that it was the holiday season, simply including a date of return to work on the voicemail would have been appreciated. In addition, the free “expedited” shipping was misleading, especially with the product being out of stock. As previously mentioned, I might as well be a professional online shopper, so I have encountered many desired products being out of stock before, but usually, the seller will tell you that upfront, along with an estimated shipping date. Had this been provided in this case, I wouldn’t have been left with the bit of sour lemon taste in my mouth.
This product has immense versatility – the long extension piece that allows you to vacuum ceiling fans, crown molding, and other ledges can be unclicked, leaving you with a handheld unit that will be useful for a quick once over in the car (or, if you are lucky like me, for hubby to do a quick once over in your car for you).
Now to get to the good part – the actual vacuum. This thing is absolutely amazing. It has a ton of included accessories, including a special head for hard floors. Its increased power allows for up to 40 minutes of vacuuming, more than enough to get through my entire house. (***Disclaimer here – there is a ‘max’ button that gives only seven minutes of power; however, this isn’t necessary for routine household messes). The V8 Absolute has a bit more weight to it than I anticipated, but I understand it for the increased power. I haven’t run out of charge yet and have honestly used it every single day since it arrived – it just makes it so much easier than lugging out the big vacuum to clean the everyday messes such as those in the kitchen that arise from having a toddler. Stairs are a quick and easy task now, when before, the dust bunnies would reside for much longer simply because it was annoying to drag out the big guns. Overall, I’m pleased with the product and would advise anyone who is on the fence to take the plunge. Yes, it is an expensive luxury; however, in my opinion, it will be worth it. I expected more from Dyson Canada with respect to customer service and follow through – all of which could have been avoided had the website simply been upfront and honest with the overselling of the product. A quick ‘ships in 1-2 weeks’ would have covered it.
